The right LED screen size will depend on the visual impact you want to provide to your audience, your budget, and your practical requirements. It should be large enough to capture attention and deliver clear visuals, yet proportionate to the space, viewing distance, and purpose of the display. With LED screen sizes available in a wide range of formats, carefully evaluating these factors ensures your commercial LED display creates maximum impact for your event or installation, without unnecessary overspending.

What Makes Up the LED Screen Size?

Unlike the common LED TVs found in households, commercial LED screens are modular systems made up of standardized components. This modularity is what gives LED displays their flexibility, allowing them to scale in size from a sleek boutique display to an expansive outdoor billboard.

Defining the Physical Size & Modular Construction

There are three components to consider when determining the LED screen size for your application:

  • LED Module: The smallest functional unit of an LED display. It consists of LEDs, PCB boards, masks, and driving circuits, and is responsible for image formation at the pixel level.

  • LED Panel or Cabinet: A structural enclosure that houses multiple LED modules. Each cabinet also includes the frame, power supply, receiving cards, and control systems necessary for operation.

  • LED Video Wall: The complete display surface, created by assembling multiple LED panels together to achieve the required width and height.

What Are the Standard LED Screen Sizes & Their Common Applications?

Not all LED screen sizes are created equal. Depending on your location and audience, certain configurations offer better clarity and value. These are some of the most common LED screen configurations and their typical applications.

1. Small/Medium Indoor Displays

These LED screen sizes offer high image clarity and are well-suited for environments that require detailed visuals and sharp text.

Module Size

320 × 160mm

Cabinet Size

640 × 480 × 59mm

Pixel Pitch

2mm

2.5mm

3.076mm

4mm

Application

Ideal for storefront displays, indoor advertising, retail promotions, and information screens where viewers are at close to medium distances.

2. Large-Scale Outdoor Billboards

Designed for long viewing distances, these larger LED screen sizes provide excellent visibility, high brightness, and durability in outdoor environments.

Module Size

320 × 160mm

Cabinet Size

960×960×108mm

Pixel Pitch

4mm

5mm

8mm

10mm

Application

Commonly used for outdoor advertising, large-scale billboards, public announcements, and outdoor event displays.

Critical Factors Driving Optimal LED Size Selection

These are some of the factors to consider when selecting the LED screen size for your application:

The Interplay of Viewing Distance and Pixel Pitch

The distance between the audience and the display dictates the required pixel pitch, which in turn defines the achievable resolution and the minimum effective LED screen size. Pixel pitch refers to the distance (in millimetres) between individual LEDs.

To choose the right LED screen size based on viewing distance, consider the following:

  • Closer Viewing Distance: Requires a smaller pixel pitch to maintain image clarity.

  • Farther Viewing Distance: Allows a larger pixel pitch, which is often more cost-effective.

Environmental and Content Constraints: Indoor vs Outdoor LEDs

Environmental conditions and content format are important to determine the optimal LED sizes because indoor and outdoor LED displays differ in terms of brightness, pixel pitch, and durability.

  • Indoor LEDs: They are typically viewed from shorter distances, so they require a smaller pixel pitch to deliver sharp and detailed visuals. Brightness is less critical in controlled indoor settings, which is why most indoor displays operate effectively at 500–1,200 nits. Additionally, these screens are built for indoor conditions and often prioritise quiet, fanless operation so they can operate optimally in boardrooms, corporate lobbies, and premium retail environments.

  • Outdoor LEDs: LED screens for outdoor use should be bright enough to remain visible under direct sunlight. As a result, they require significantly higher brightness levels, typically 5,000 nits or more. These displays also need durable, weatherproof construction to withstand Singapore’s climate, rain, dust, and temperature fluctuations.

Technical Calculation and Final Financial Assessment

Accurately calculating LED screen size helps determine the right video wall design for optimal viewing, correct pixel density, and seamless installation.

Calculate by Final Width and Height

This method is ideal when you already know the exact space the LED wall must fit. You can work backwards to determine the number of cabinets required.

This approach is best when the LED wall must match a specific architectural opening.

For instance:

Desired LED wall size: 6m (W) × 4m (H)

Cabinet size: 700 × 700mm (0.5 × 0.5m)

Calculation:

Cabinets in width: 6 ÷ 0.7 = 8.57 round off to 9 cabinets

Cabinets in height: 4 ÷ 0.7 = 5.71 round off to 6 cabinets

Result:

Your LED wall needs 9 × 6 = 54 cabinets

Final size = 6.3m × 4.2m

Calculate by Module Size

This method is useful when you select the pixel pitch and module type first. Screen size is calculated based on the number of modules used. Module-based calculations are commonly used for fine-pitch indoor displays.

For instance:

Module size: 320 × 160mm (0.32 × 0.16m)

Modules required: 12 modules (W) × 8 modules (H)

Calculation:

Width: 12 × 0.32 = 3.84m

Height: 8 × 0.16 = 1.28m

Result:

Final LED wall size: 3.84m × 1.28m

Calculate by Cabinet Size

This is the most widely used method in engineering because installation is based on cabinet dimensions.

For instance:

Cabinet size: 640 × 480mm (0.64 × 0.48m)

Configuration: 6 cabinets (W) × 4 cabinets (H)

Calculation:

Width: 6 × 0.64 = 3.84m

Height: 4 × 0.48 = 1.92m

Result:

Final LED wall size: 3.84 m × 1.92m
